New fans and seasoned Army members, rejoice: BTS is officially back.
After completing compulsory service in South Korea’s military and launching some solo careers, seven members of the global K-pop scene — RM, Jin, Suga, J-Hope, Jimin, V and Jung Kook — are reuniting on a new album, an upcoming world tour, a Netflix documentary and more.
In the excitement, Jin, Jimin and V came over Fashion’s kitchen prepares delicious dinners for Now Serving, a video series in which celebrities create their favorite dishes.
In the video, the trio makes janchi-guksu (a Korean noodle soup) and misugaru (a traditional drink made from grain flour). Jin serves as chef, and Jimin and V serve as sous chefs. (“Jin is someone who cooks a lot, and he’s very good at it,” V explains). Jin chose this dish because it is simple and he often makes it at home.
Step one: They put on gloves and cut vegetables. Jin shows off his mesmerizing knife skills. They tell the origin story of the dish, which is known as “banquet noodles” or “party noodles.” Jin prepared a sauce that he liked sweeter. They made different styles of misugaru, tasting them while discussing the merits of sugar and honey as sweeteners. They also revealed their favorite foods to eat on tour: kimchi stew and pork belly.
When asked about the new album, Arirang, V said: “This is our first full album in a while. It speaks to our intention to make a change.”
The fun ramps up when the noodles start cooking. Jin shared a trick to tell if the noodles are done: Throw them against the wall. Recognizing the chaotic energy of this approach, Jimin said, “But Kim, are you really going to have our army grab hot noodles at home and throw them against the wall?” They tried throwing the noodles on a cutting board, only to find that it didn’t quite work; it did stick, but wasn’t fully cooked.
The trio also reflected on what it was like to work together as a band again. “What does the word ‘together’ mean to you at this moment, Jin?” V asked.
“For me, I was already working on a personal project before you guys came back,” Jin replied. “I do feel like, as a solo artist, you don’t get to experience something like this. Yeah, it’s so much fun being with the members. It’s so much fun, I’m so happy, my heart is racing.”
V Toss the noodles to cool so they look like an absolute ball (and make a bit of a mess). “If I were your mom, seriously… you’d better clean it up before you leave,” Jimin joked. “If I were your mother, you’d be screwed.” All kitchen shenanigans aside, the final dish is an Instagram-worthy feast.
