New York – Minister Nguyen Hoang Nguyen, Charge d’Affaires of the Permanent Mission of Vietnam to the United Nations, reiterated Vietnam’s firm commitment to promoting nuclear disarmament and preventing the proliferation of nuclear weapons, emphasizing the importance of multilateral cooperation and dialogue in addressing global security challenges.
Nguyen Xuan Phuc delivered a speech at the International Disarmament and Non-Proliferation Awareness Day debate co-hosted by the Permanent Missions of Vietnam and Kyrgyzstan to the United Nations in New York recently. He expressed concern about the current international security environment, stressed the importance of advancing disarmament efforts, and called on all countries to strengthen unity and multilateralism to build trust and consensus on this issue.
The Vietnamese representative also reiterated Vietnam’s principled position and firm commitment to these efforts, emphasizing Vietnam’s determination to serve as Chairman of the Eleventh Review Conference of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (RevCon11) in a balanced, transparent and inclusive manner.
The discussion was co-sponsored and coordinated by the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN), the Nuclear Age Peace Foundation (NAPF), and Columbia University’s Frontiers of Science Program (FSP). Nearly 100 people attended, including representatives from United Nations agencies, United Nations member states, and scholars and students from New York University.
Participants expressed concerns about the increasingly complex geopolitical environment and the risks posed by intensifying arms races and international conflicts. Both sides emphasized the important role of the global disarmament process and preventing the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, including the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons, the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons and other relevant international treaties.
They stressed the importance of continuing dialogue, strengthening cooperation and raising public awareness, especially among young people, of the devastating consequences of nuclear weapons, as well as the role of multilateral cooperation in efforts to permanently eliminate the nuclear threat.
The participants spoke highly of and expressed their strong support for Vietnam to serve as the chair of the 11th Revision Conference of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons, held in New York from April to May this year.
In 2022, the 77th United Nations General Assembly passed resolution A/RES/77/51, designating March 5, when the 1970 Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons entered into force, as the “International Disarmament and Non-Proliferation Awareness Day”.
The resolution aims to raise public awareness of the importance of nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation to international peace and security. It also called on UN member states, international organizations, the public and the media to mark the day through educational campaigns and public awareness-raising initiatives.
