President Trump’s new TrumpRx Online Platform is a key part of his plan to help lower drug costs for consumers, with some polls showing two-thirds of Americans citing high health care costs as one of the reasons. Main financial issues.
Here’s what to know about TrumpRx, which launched Thursday and will provide “immediate relief” to patients across the U.S., the White House said in a fact sheet
What is TrumpRx?
The White House said Trumprx.gov offers consumers the opportunity for “substantial immediate price reductions” on dozens of commonly used drugs. The website does not allow users to purchase drugs directly, but instead directs people to the drugmaker’s website where they can fill their prescriptions.
TrumpRx notes that it only “displays discounted drug pricing offers” and does not sell drugs directly to consumers.
“This is a portal where people can check to see if they can find cheaper direct-to-consumer prices from drug manufacturers,” Kaye Pestaina, vice president and director of patient and consumer protection programs at KFF, told CBS News. “This is not a storefront.”
To purchase a discounted drug, TrumpRx requires users to follow the instructions for each drug offer on the platform.
Who can use TrumpRx?
TrumpRx can be used by anyone with a prescription. However, the platform currently does not accept insurance and is limited to patients who pay for their medications out of pocket.
“Currently, TrumpRx discounted pricing is only available to patients paying cash,” the platform states.
Therefore, spending on drugs purchased through TrumpRx will not count toward a consumer’s insurance deductible.
Still, cheaper, direct-to-consumer options could benefit uninsured Americans, those with high deductibles, and patients whose medications aren’t covered by insurance
“Going forward, you should not be buying drugs, but at least check to see if they are available at these discounted prices,” Dr. Muhammad Oz, director of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, said Thursday.
By contrast, Pestana noted that consumers can also find lower drug prices through their health insurance. “That might be a good thing for some people, but for most people, they’re paying less through insurance,” she said.
Petaina noted that exceptions may include GLP-1 drugs used for weight loss, where TrumpRX could provide savings. “Your employer may not cover such medications, or there may be restrictions.”
For example, the White House fact sheet says TrumpRx offers Novo Nordisk’s Wegovy The price of the pill drops from $1,349 to $149 per month. The Trump administration says consumers can also save significant money on drugs used to treat infertility.
Mr Trump urges Congress to pass “Great health care plan” He launched the move in January to lower health insurance costs. The White House said the proposal would “enable TrumpRx.gov purchases to be integrated into health plans” and lower health insurance costs.
What medications are provided?
Currently, consumers can obtain 43 different medications through TrumpRx to treat a range of conditions. For example, according to the platform, users seeking fertility drugs can get an 83% discount on Gonal F, a drug containing follicle-stimulating hormone.
“Fertility drug pricing could benefit a lot of people because they’re not typically covered by insurance, and TrumpRx offers discounts,” Merith Basey, CEO of the patient advocacy group Patients for Affordable Drugs Now, told CBS News.
Late last year, the White House Make a deal More than a dozen drugmakers participate in coupon-like programs, including AstraZeneca, Eli Lilly and Genentech, Merck, Pfizer and others.
The White House said it plans to strike deals with more drugmakers to expand the list of discounted drugs offered through TrumpRx.
