Is there a city more inspiring for creativity than New York? Our metropolis is an endless reference for designer collections – stylish locals with a knack for putting together cool yet nonchalant looks provide endless fodder. New York street style was the inspiration for Tommy Hilfiger’s new fall collection: the designer wanted to infuse his classic preppy pieces with a more New York attitude, so he reimagined some key pieces from his own archives.
She chose a silk shirt whose geometric pattern was taken from one of his men’s ties. A bright green crewneck—almost Brat green, even—was also inspired by the green lining of a built-in pen holder on one of his archival pieces.
Much of the collection was classic Tommy style – including plenty of jeans, coats and striped shirts in his familiar red, blue and white tones. Straight-leg, medium-wash denim felt right for the moment, as did his cotton boxer jackets, some trimmed with faux fur collars. (Love it or hate it, fur is making a comeback in a big way.)
Meanwhile, in menswear, he took dressy wardrobe staples—double-breasted suits, collared dress shirts—and gave them a casual feel with more casual pieces like green cargo pants or a sporty varsity jacket. His colorful cable-knit quarter-zips and Fair Isle knits continue to sell well, so why not double down? Overall, this collection may have been riskier, but when it comes to New Yorker style, it’s all about creative styling, and Hilfiger offered pieces that easily look good.
