These ’90s Ankle Jeans Are About to Be Everywhere

There was a time, not so long ago, when everyone was talking about languid silhouettes and watery hems. Street fashionistas would wear jeans – still do actually – that completely swallowed up their shoes (we all remember the summer of ’24 when everyone had a little triangular bootie in their jeans). But what now? The atmosphere changes. Not only have straight-leg jeans become a major denim trend, but cropped jeans have also taken over—and I’m talking about ankle jeans, a style beloved by celebrities in the ’90s, from Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy to Cindy Crawford to Julia Roberts.

It should come as no surprise to anyone that the ’90s cropped jeans are having their moment in the sun. We witnessed a mass hysteria following the release of love storyeveryone dresses like CBK, and she’s been known to often wear cropped jeans (especially Levi’s 517s, which have a bootcut silhouette and hem that hits just above the ankle). Cropped jeans have also been a fixture on recent runways – at Celine’s Spring/Summer 2026 show, models walked the catwalk wearing cropped jeans, showing off ankle socks and Jazz Derby shoes.
