The Wolf Cut Will Be Everywhere This Spring

Fluffy, cool, slim and just right, it’s no wonder celebrities like Miley Cyrus, Suki Waterhouse, Jenna Ortega and now Cara Delevingne are fans of the wolf hairstyle. “The wolf hairstyle balances attitude with softness,” says celebrity hairstylist Charlotte Mensah. It combines the best of shag and mullet to create a hybrid style that’s both modern and wearable. “The face-framing layers are blended together to create a textured effect,” she continues. “The hair looks effortless rather than over-groomed and intentionally dropped.”

What is wolf cut?

The wolf haircut is a modern mashup of the ’70s shag and the ’80s mullet, says hairstylist and salon founder Larry King. “The wolf haircut has lots of undulating layers of texture, adding movement, volume, and that lived-in cool that celebrities love.” Fashion. It’s “edgy, elegant and messy” at the same time, he added.

“The silhouette is slightly elongated, with sharp angles and more height, giving it a sculpted and lifted effect rather than super soft, rounded volume,” adds Nata Bumford of Hershesons. “It’s perfect for lobs, mid-lengths, or long hair.”

It’s versatile, but also a unique and edgy style, so think twice before deciding.

What is the ideal length for a chic wolf cut?

According to hairstylist and brand founder Sam McKnight, you can cut the wolf haircut to any length, but the most popular cut is to brush the collarbone. King agrees: “Wolf hairstyles that hit the collarbone or above look stunning when styled with soft waves.”

Is the wolf hairstyle suitable for every hair type?

In short, the answer is yes, but your stylist will need to keep the texture of your hair in mind before cutting it. “A good wolf haircut depends on the texture and thickness of your hair,” McKnight points out. “Hair with a natural texture, such as waves or curls, is ideal for this shape because it requires less effort and time to style,” he explains. Usually, when cutting is done properly, the complete procedure is simple: “wash, product, and go.”

“With curly hair, the key is to cut in a way that respects the curl pattern so that the layers enhance the natural shape rather than creating unnecessary bulk,” says Mensah. “If you love the look but don’t want to change it permanently, you can definitely achieve the wolf cut effect with a wig or a weave—it’s a great way to play with fringe, layers and shapes,” she adds.
