The Small, Simple Pleasures of ‘Shrinking’ Star Lukita Maxwell

Lukita Maxwell was a little surprised to learn that there was something of an “analog” trend among young people. Paper notebooks, physical books, limited screen time—all of these have always been a part of her life.

“I drive an ’85 BMW and wear an analog watch. I love film photography,” Maxwell says, sitting on the floor of her Los Angeles home, her wooden desk (where she makes collages and writes personal essays) visible in the background of her Zoom setting.

Her brow furrowed. “Now I’m afraid that’s a fashionable way of saying it.” Then she shrugged.

The 24-year-old actress and multi-disciplinary artist currently stars in the critically acclaimed Apple TV comedy shrinkShe recently returned from a trip to Paris, where she attended a dinner at Kenzo Takada’s former home near the Bastille to celebrate the brand’s fall 2026 men’s collection. On Instagram, she posted a photo of herself – wearing an olive green blazer with a white Peter Pan collar peeking out – posing with a mannequin emblazoned with the Kenzo logo.

Her social media bridges analog and digital. To celebrate her 23rd birthday, Maxwell shared a mood board featuring the 2005 Japanese comedy Linda Linda LindaNicole Kidman smokes a cigarette and performs a pas de deux in a ballet in Cannes in 2003 garden (1994), choreographed by Angelin Preljocaj. “When I posted this, I was single,” she notes, “so I thought I was embodying this dreamy, beautiful relationship and movement.” It worked: “I’m in a relationship now that feels like that, which is sweet.”

These references come from a lifetime of exposure to art. She began studying ballet at the age of three, her first love. She also played violin at school. Maxwell’s father gave her her first camera—“a little Olympus digital point-and-shoot”—that sat in the garage of her grandfather’s home in St. George, Utah, where the family had moved from Bali, Indonesia. (Maxwell was born in Jakarta.) At age 10, she remembers being the only child in her library class born outside the United States. “It gave me a lot of ‘protagonist energy’ at the time,” she laughs. “I didn’t feel uncomfortable, it felt very individualistic and unique.” She attributes this energy to her mom, a woman who “didn’t give a shit about tradition.”
