‘The New Years’ Is the Most Romantic TV Show of the Year

There’s also a structural gimmick – it takes a little getting used to, but it eventually makes new year There is light on the feet. Each episode only takes place on December 31st of a consecutive year, so the show runs from 2014 to 2024. In the opening episode, Ana (played by Iria Del Rio) is a restless 30-year-old bartender (her birthday is December 31) who is conflicted about how to do her job. At an after-get off work party, she meets Oscar (Francisco Carril, quietly vulnerable and doggedly strong), a young medical student, and they have an obsessive, alcohol-fueled hookup (shot with unabashed bluntness, like all the sex scenes), which may or may not lead to anything.

This is important. Anna and Oscar fall in love, but not as is often portrayed, their connection, although deep, never quite in sync. Life is full of push and pull: Anna wants adventure, Oscar wants stability; Anna wants adventure, Oscar wants stability; they expect from each other the opposite of what they get. new year The pace can be stately at times (from Madrid to Berlin and Lyon), but persistence pays off handsomely. Several plot developments mid-series caught me by surprise, and I gradually began to watch each episode with the undivided attention I usually have for a show devoted to several seasons. Experience exquisiteness and novelty: what new year The lack of events may be made up for by conversations and subtle psychological revelations about our protagonist and his family and acquaintances. Over time, these two complex adults became as real as friends to me. Anna is powerless over her appetite (in fact, she becomes a chef); Oscar is gentle and kind, and a good doctor, but he is also distrustful and hurt by past events.

I won’t reveal the ending, but by the time you get there (Mubi will roll out episodes weekly in January), the question of whether Anna and Oscar can find their way to each other once and for all may seem as important as anything you’ve seen this year.
