Some people spent a weekend spring cleaning; others added a new eye-candy to their wardrobes (right now, we’re partial to statement dresses). We all approach the change of seasons in different ways—for interior designers, the arrival of April means making some small adjustments to your home in preparation for warmer weather, brighter colors, and an overall more fun spirit.
The easiest place to start? The consensus is clear: your linen cupboard. “Just like you change your wardrobe with the seasons, I like to refresh my home by switching up fabrics and textiles—think subtle changes in color and tone, too,” says designer Christine Gachot. “As spring approaches, my own wardrobe staples have become simpler, focusing on white T-shirts and light denim, with a more relaxed feel. The same mentality applies to your base layers at home: keep the tones fresh and effortlessly bright.”
FashionDesigner-Approved Guide to Spring Decor Changes
With the basics in place, we decided to poll the experts to see what other low-lift swaps they’ve been doing this season. From lightweight lampshades to emerald green Italian tableware, here are the spring decor changes that interior designers are relying on in their own spaces.
“Come April, I’m always itching to swap out my heavy duvet for a lighter, fresher cover, or replace my mohair blanket with lightweight cotton and lightweight cashmere. Start with texture. Replacing a heavier cover with breathable linens and soft cottons can make a room feel lighter, both visually and physically.
While I usually gravitate toward a more minimalist color palette, the arrival of warmer weather feels like an open invitation to pattern and color, especially when hosting. Lisa Corti napkins from my collection add a playful pop to the table, while Porta and Ginori 1735 tableware add a touch of tasteful whimsy. Try mixing and matching, layering colors, and combining prints to celebrate the colors of spring.
Finally, think of spring cleaning as a way to clear your mind and create space for new beginnings. Open all windows to let in fresh air. Take the time to go through every closet, drawer, and cupboard to collect donated items. Doing good is as refreshing as a clean home. For a complete refresh, a fresh coat of paint on the walls or even targeted touch-ups can transform the room. Pressed for time? Use my secret weapon, the Magic Eraser, to tackle isolated spots. Every little task adds up to making your home look new and ready for spring. “
