Combining traditional ingredients with modern science, Japanese skincare’s appeal extends far beyond its best-selling formulas. That’s how this philosophy turns skin care into a ritual; with double moisturizing at its core. No, it’s more than just layering two of your favorite moisturizers for extra moisture.
“Double hydration embodies one of the most fundamental principles of Japanese beauty tradition,” says J-beauty expert and certified esthetician Kyoko Getz Fashion. “Hydration is not a simple step, but a layering ritual that is intentional, disciplined, and respectful of the skin’s natural structure.” In Japan, she explains, a healthy complexion and a strong skin barrier go hand in hand. “We know that without adequate moisture and lipids, skin cannot function optimally.” Japanese beauty expert Hinako Sugioka agrees, detailing what the method entails: “Water is first delivered to the skin and then sealed.”

To do this, products must be chosen with intention. Experts say the first step is to saturate your skin with a serum (similar to a traditional toner) for added hydration, then replace your standard moisturizer with lotion. If this term sounds unfamiliar, it’s simpler than it looks. “A lotion is a lightweight moisturizer: It’s a mixture of oil and water, both blended together (usually with the help of an emulsifier),” explains licensed esthetician Emma Jinn, adding that, texture-wise, it’s somewhere between a serum and a cream.
After understanding this technology, FashionBeauty shopping editor Kiana Murden realizes this has been her secret to fighting dryness. According to Getz, that’s because the two-step method is so effective because it mirrors the structure of healthy skin. Replenishes skin’s moisture in the first step, protects it in the second – a combination that improves elasticity, calms inflammation and strengthens barrier integrity. “I always say this, respect your skin, respect yourself,” she said. “When you respect your skin’s natural rhythm and patiently build its power, you create lasting health instead of chasing a temporary glow.” Next, discover and master every step of the Double Hydration Method to inspire your own ritual.

Step 1: Replenish moisture with essence
Sugioka explains that starting with a serum formulated with moisturizers is key, as these ingredients not only add moisture, but also draw moisture into the skin and help hold it in place. “Ultimately, the goal of this step is simple: to effectively provide moisture and prepare the skin for what’s next,” she says. Getz agrees, describing serum as the foundation for proper hydration.
When choosing one, the texture can range from watery to creamy. Which one is best? This largely depends on your skin type, the climate you live in, and personal preference. “The water-based formula is absorbent and easy to layer, making it perfect for oily or combination skin, or for use in humid conditions,” says Sugioka. “Also, creamy textures often contain small amounts of emollients, providing a slightly more cushioned feel that can be comforting for dry or damaged skin.”
