The dust is slowly settling with the shocking and controversial release of Emerald Fennell. Every deadlineThe Emmy, SAG and Golden Globe nominee will star in a new TV series adaptation of Charlotte Brontë’s novel Jane Eyre.
She will play the formidable heroine – an orphan who overcomes tremendous adversity to work as a governess and attract the attention of her brooding employer Mr Rochester – succession Screenwriter Miriam Battye penned the adapted screenplay. It should also be in safe hands, considering the recap is produced by UK production company Working Title, the same company that brought us Joe Wright’s 2005 pride and Prejudice 2020 with Autumn de Wilde Emmaand will allow us to reimagine reason and sensibilityThe Fall is coming, helmed by Daisy Edgar Jones.
Preliminary discussions are reportedly underway with a BBC who should join the project, and speculation has already begun about who will play the elusive Mr Rochester. (Michael Fassbender, Ciarán Hinds, Timothy Dalton, William Hurt and Orson Welles, among others, have appeared on both the big and small screens in the past.)
Although it will celebrate its 180th anniversary in 2027, it’s unclear when it will be released. Jane Eyre’s first publication, so sometime next year seems like a safe bet.
