Since its publication in 1847, this great classic novel Wuthering Heights Beginning with a silent film in 1920, the sound grew louder and louder over the course of a century, culminating in a 2026 film directed by Emerald Fennell.
Over the course of this series of adaptations, each filmmaker gradually softened the original form—a dark and twisted tale of obsession, intergenerational trauma, and self-destruction—into something closer to a wild cinematic love story. These adaptations tend to confirm the saying “He who does not create destroys” – which, ironically, is also the story of Heathcliff. Although Hollywood has tried to portray him as a sexy, painful, romantic hero on screen, Heathcliff is actually more like a horrible boyfriend with a personality disorder who destroys the hearts and lives of innocent people.
When we read the story of Catherine and Heathcliff, we desire to be loved so intensely that it might actually kill us, a testament to our culture’s tendency to conflate toxicity with the heights of romance. It’s an illusion, and a misunderstanding that takes many of us years to forget: in fact, love is no Measured in units of pain.
Everyone has to deal with the arrival of the other Wuthering Heights Adaptation – Judging from the trailer alone, I predict it will undo years of personal growth in her own way. Be vigilant. Fixed windows. Hold your tightly attached boyfriend tight, even if they’re a bit stupid and don’t (and never have and never will) kiss you while pushing you against the wall.
I prepared myself by watching all the previous adaptations, including one set in medieval Japan. As I tracked the gradual softening of Heathcliff’s character and the expansion of his emotional backstory, I discovered possible reasons why real inner lasting fantasies Wuthering Heights: The ex that will forever haunt you.
What more could a girl really ask for? Whether we’ve been abandoned, haunted, or betrayed, our best hope is to appear in that man’s dream one night and force him to think of us. Of course, there are risks associated with appearing in your ex’s dreams. You have no control over what you wear or how you behave. (I worried that I’d appear in other people’s dreams the same way I appear in my own: wearing a retainer that for some reason couldn’t be removed.) But Cathy pulled it off perfectly.
So in an effort to keep female fantasies safe from toxicity, I’ve ranked the most popular Wuthering Heights An adaptation based on a fantasy I prefer to focus on: how effectively Cathy haunts her ex.
