“There’s a real spirit of the game right now,” West said Fashion. “More than ever, people are willing to explore, layer and treat fragrance as an accessory that can change to suit their mood, moment or season. Consumers are still staying true to their favorites, but with a new willingness to explore.”

The result is what West shamelessly calls a “perfume wardrobe”—a rotating mix of scents, just like you would pick out an outfit. Sometimes something sophisticated and familiar is called for; Others invite experimentation. One clear example is the resurgence in popularity of body sprays, which have grown far beyond their perhaps youthful reputation. Today’s versions are more sophisticated and can even be worn as part of a wider body care ritual, often layering and customizing the scent for a more personalized DIY style.

That said, West believes there are some standout notes that have a place in the market; their rise comes at a time when shoppers are looking far beyond the traditional designer fragrance aisle. Growing curiosity about niche and independent fragrance brands (due in part to the endless scrolling of #FragranceTok) is introducing consumers to smaller brands, unusual notes, and new ways of thinking about scent. “What feels particularly exciting right now is the evolution of the fruity notes, and the resulting blend is complex and truly refreshing,” adds West. Another standout? Matcha – For those who absolutely love their morning drink, they also want to smell like matcha.
