In Hollywood, a costume designer’s job is to tell stories through fashion, so it’s fitting that at tonight’s 2026 Oscars, many of the costume designers nominated are opting for meaningful red carpet looks.
The group of fashion designers honored this year – Malgosia Turzanska (Hamnet), Deborah L. Scott (Avatar: Fire and Ashes), Kate Hawley (frankenstein), Miyako Bellici (Marty Supre) and Ruth E. Carter (sinner)—reflecting a range of different stylistic sensibilities; on screen, their work brings eras and settings as disparate as 16th-century Warwickshire, 1930s Mississippi, and 1950s New York to exciting life. However, on tonight’s red carpet, they insisted on telling more personal stories. While some customers prefer vintage pieces, others create their own looks.
Tuzanska belongs to the latter. “I designed this dress to feel like opening a new box of safety pins at the beginning of a project,” she told us Fashion. The sculptural denim piece was made at John Kristiansen’s New York clothing store, before Turzanska embellished it with silver pins (with the help of her two best friends, Lou and Robyn). “Whenever someone asks me for the most basic work tool, I always say safety pins,” Tuzanska continued. “I always have a pair in my pocket. It’s an unsung hero of the apparel world, so I’m proud to finally put it on a pedestal!”
