The National University Center for Digestive Health integrates patients from their initial consultation to surgery.
The National University Hospital (NUH) has opened the National University Center for Digestive Health (NUCD), which is dedicated to early detection and advanced treatment of digestive diseases.
NUH said the NUCD accelerates patient access from initial gastrointestinal consultation to surgical expertise in the upper gastrointestinal tract, hepatobiliary, pancreas and colorectum.
It added that this streamlined approach reduces waiting times, minimizes repeat visits and enables faster treatment decisions for better outcomes.
Since its conception in 2024, NUCD has integrated NUH’s digestive health services and serves as a referral center for complex cases at other hospitals within the National University Health System.
Hospitals within the system include Ng Teng Fong General Hospital and Alexander Hospital.
The hospital said NUCD contributed to the clinical validation and implementation of the Fibrosis 4 (FIB-4) score and fibroscan to screen for liver fibrosis in patients at high risk for fatty liver disease and other chronic liver diseases.
To date, the center has screened more than 12,000 high-risk patients, facilitating early detection and intervention.
Another focus of the center is improving colorectal cancer detection rates through colonoscopy quality.
It is the second most common cancer and the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths locally, according to the Singapore Cancer Registry’s 2022 annual report.
