Stem Cell Skincare Is the Next Frontier of Anti-Aging

Currently, the skincare industry is awash with exciting and often mysterious active ingredients—such as exosomes, bone spicules, and PDRN. Among them, stem cells are the latest source of skin renewal to hit the shelves. Stem cell skin care products are designed to harness the innate power of stem cells naturally found in the skin to slow the signs of aging. This is understandable. After all, “stem cells are the skin’s built-in repair system,” says Asmi Berry, a board-certified dermatologist in Los Angeles. Stem cells are found in the deepest layers of the skin and are tasked with creating fresh, healthy skin cells when old or damaged skin cells are ready to retire. When you’re young, the process is simple and seamless. But “as we age, stem cell activity slows down, which manifests as thinner skin, slower healing, dullness, and fine lines,” explains Dr. Berry.

One major difference from other active ingredients is that stem cell skin care products are not necessarily filled with living stem cells. Instead, they possess “a collection of exosomes and/or growth factors that are supposed to signal your own skin cells to transform into healthier cells that then produce more collagen and function like younger cells,” says Arash Akhavan, MD, a board-certified dermatologist in New York City. For those unfamiliar, exosomes are sacs filled with growth factors and cytokines; these proteins signal your body to begin repair and production processes, he said.

In other words, these formulas deliver ingredients typical of skin stem cells to replicate their effects, rather than delivering the stem cells themselves. But they can still translate into noticeable differences in signs of aging, such as wrinkles, fine lines, and hyperpigmentation. With that in mind, keep scrolling to see the products they recommend.

Best Overall: SkinMedica TNS Advanced+ Serum

Dermatology

TNS Advanced+ Essence

  • Why we love it: SkinMedica’s flagship serum has years of research behind it, and many dermatologists support its ability to “improve firmness, texture, and overall skin health over time,” explains Dr. Berry, who recommends it to patients who are concerned about skin texture due to collagen loss or acne scarring. “It uses a blend of stem cell-derived growth factors and peptides to strengthen collagen and elastin.” The dual-chamber bottle contains two formulas: one with peptides and growth factors to support healthy skin function, and another with marine extracts to support collagen and elastin production; this setup maintains freshness while maintaining optimal potency.
  • Main ingredients: Human fibroblast conditioned medium, microalgae extract, peptides
  • Best for: All skin types, especially mature skin or skin with uneven skin texture
  • size: 30ml

Best for wrinkles: Neocutis Bioserum

  • Why we love it: Neocutis was founded on decades of wound healing research, culminating in this firming serum. “It contains high concentrations of stem cell-derived growth factors and proprietary peptides to help support skin repair, elasticity and resilience, especially in mature skin,” says Dr. Berry, who finds it particularly helpful for those with fine lines, dehydrated skin, or both. This combination means it works quickly, leaving skin smoother, brighter and softer in less than a week, according to the brand’s tests.
  • Main ingredients: Human growth factor (skin lysate), peptides, hyaluronic acid, arginine, glycerin
  • Best for: mature or dry skin
  • size: 30ml

  • Why we love it: The serum, infused with ingredients derived from stem cells found in human fat, has become a favorite among Dr. Akhavan’s patients. “Unlike plant stem cells, growth factors and proteins derived from human stem cells may signal skin tissue regeneration more efficiently,” he said. “These ingredients, paired with snow mushroom extract, probiotics and hyaluronic acid, have potent anti-inflammatory and moisturizing effects.” The line-up of growth factors, exosomes, cytokines and peptides means it can deliver most of what is found in stem cells.
  • Main ingredients: Human adipose stem cell conditioned medium, peptides, allantoin, hyaluronic acid, panthenol
  • Best for: mature or dry skin
  • size: 30ml

Best Plant-Based: Kate Somerville Kateceuticals Supercell Regenerating Serum

Day 8

regenerating serum

  • Why we love it: This dermatologist-formulated serum doesn’t rely on standard nutrients from stem cells, instead choosing a proprietary combination of growth factors and 24 bioidentical peptides (meaning they’re more readily accepted by the skin); they work together to smooth expression lines and brighten dark spots. They’re backed by time-tested actives like hyaluronic acid (volumizes and hydrates), glycolic acid (smooths and brightens), and niacinamide (reduces inflammation).

Answer Repair Serum

  • Why we love it: An eye-popping 50% of The Answer Reparative Serum is composed of stem cell conditioned media such as peptides, growth factors, exosomes, and cytokines, which together help address dark spots, wrinkles, and skin laxity. Derived from human fat stem cells, these ingredients help boost collagen production and speed wound healing; they also have natural anti-inflammatory properties, making this serum ideal for people with sensitive skin. Equally impressive: It relies almost entirely on this medium, with only five other ingredients to round out its benefits.
  • Editing experience: “I sought out this serum to help my skin recover from a recent laser treatment, and boy am I obsessed. What initially drew me to it was its impressively minimalist ingredient list, filled with so many anti-aging superstar ingredients. Despite its potency, it’s shocking in its simplicity; the texture is almost cooling and sinks into the skin effortlessly.” —Kiana Murden, beauty shopping editor
