Square Nail Designs Are Back–How to Wear Spring’s Coolest Manicure Trend

The early 2000s offered a treasure trove of trends—curly hair and icy blue eyeshadow. The latest revival for 2026 is the square nail design. “Square nails are a huge trend right now,” says celebrity manicurist Michelle Humphrey. “The 2000s are back and brands like Miu Miu are bringing back nostalgic fashion, so of course the nail art trend is coming with it.”

Loved by everyone from Dua Lipa to Kylie Jenner, square nail designs can be dramatic and bold or more simple and low-maintenance, depending on your preference. “We’re used to sophistication, and this shape has a bolder structure that requires more confidence to wear,” says professional manicurist Julia Diogo. You just need to focus on creating a square tip. “Square shapes work well with any nail length, but right now, medium to longer lengths are in style,” Humphrey shares.

This trend also lends itself to vibrant patterns, colors, and cute patterns like polka dots, shimmery sheer shades, and silver glitter lines. “A square French manicure with a bright white tip is really cool,” Humphrey says, adding that the shape also works well with softer, more natural-looking tips. “It’s all about tapping into nostalgia.”

What are square nails?

A square nail has a straight, flat top (or, to use its technical name, a free edge). The sharp tops and sides give this popular nail shape its name.

Why will square nails be popular in 2026?

Call it a throwback to the 2000s, or a clean-girl backlash, but square nails are eye-catching and sharp—a far cry from the slightly curved almond-shaped or classic round nails that were the norm in the late 2010s and early 2020s. “The Y2K trend has brought this nail shape back into style, and I think they’ll have an even bigger resurgence this summer,” Diogo shares.

How to maintain the look of square nails?

Square tips are best for strong nails as the shape can break easily. Humphrey recommends that those with longer claws should use a strong formula such as acrylic, hard gel or polymer gel. “There’s also the Gel X system, a gel-pressed nail that’s available in a variety of square lengths and shapes,” she says.

What is the difference between square nails and square nails?

“The main difference is made by the corners,” Diogo explained. Square nails have sharper, cleaner edges, while square nails have softer edges. “Square edges create a more structured nail bed, while square edges are subtle and rounded.”

How to file your nails into a perfect square shape at home?

“Square nails are ideal for narrow, even nail beds,” explains Diogo. “We need a certain length to create a square shape, so you can start by trimming your nails to a medium length,” she adds. “I would also invest in a cuticle nipper and fancy metal tools to really push back those cuticles and lengthen the nail bed,” which is exactly what this shape calls for.

The final step is to take a thin, brittle file and file your nails flat in one direction. You can get a perfect square shape by tilting it vertically in one motion.

How to prevent square nails from chipping or snagging in corners?

Although square nails are shorter than both almond-shaped and oval-shaped nails, the sharp corners of square nails can create stress points that can easily get stuck or snagged. Therefore, Diogo recommends using a buffer to soften the corners after filing and shaping.
