If you want to finish reading Liza Minnelli’s wonderful new memoir in addition to calling in sick to work on Wednesday, Wait until you hear this, kids! I would strongly urge you to reevaluate your options. Given that celebrity memoirs often fail to live up to their hype, when you find a memoir as candid as Minnelli’s, it’s important to squeeze as much Old Hollywood gossip out of it as possible.

Minnelli talks about everything from her relationship with Princess Diana (they were good friends!) to her experience working with Gene Hackman (he was decidedly rude!) and her affair with Martin Scorsese (their love had “more layers to it than lasagna”!). But the detail I absolutely can’t stop thinking about is that at some point in 1973, she had two different fiancés at the same time…and a husband. Damn the Queen!
As Minnelli tells it, not only was she still married to her first husband, Peter Allen, when she and British actor and comedian Peter Sellers announced their engagement shortly after meeting in London; return Engaged to her childhood friend Desi Arnaz Jr. (whose parents, I think, were famously married to Minnelli; at one point in the memoir, Minnelli charmingly refers to herself as “the original Nebo baby”).
