Snacks, Spanx, and Gossip: Jessie Buckley Shares Her BAFTAs Essentials

“Great ideas for snacks,” says former BAFTA star Jessie Buckley when I ask her for her awards season must-haves. “I’ll get some.” Of course, Hamnet The star is too busy to spend too much time thinking about which granola bar to tuck into her Chanel bag, and anyway, her actual ride-or-die product is a lot more authentic than a Trek flapjack. “Leggings!” she declared, before admitting that the only downside to awards season was that shapewear “started to be a problem,” as well as “missing my little girl during the long days, forgetting to get up early to express while breastfeeding, and having to rush to the toilet for relief!”

The orgasm makes it all worth it. While lingerie — whether it’s the slick base layer required for red carpet wear or her baby girl’s diapers — has become an unexpected focus of her Hollywood streak, pinch-me moments (“That doesn’t happen in everyday life,” she often reminds herself) outweigh any of the less glamorous aspects that Buckley talks about so candidly. “The crowning moment was meeting and hanging out with some of my heroes,” she says, naming the “incredibly sweet” Paul Thomas Anderson, the “naughty and buzzy” Teyana Taylor, the “rock” Kate Winslet (“I’m not even sure she knew she helped me when I was a little nervous and overwhelmed, but she did”), and her daughter Kate Winslet. Hamnet Paul Mescal and Emily Watson co-star. Her comment on the latter? “The greatest woman I could ever call a friend.”

Another new hero is Matthieu Blazy, who welcomed Buckley to the Chanel brand just in time for her continued triumph in Tinseltown. “He’s a unique, dynamic artist and I love how he combines the past with something so current and dynamic,” she says of the creative director, who recently bestowed upon his new Irish friend the title of brand ambassador — pretty much the best thing in fashion.

There was only one choice for her BAFTA look, but Buckley and her stylist Danielle Goldberg found a way into the Chanel style that’s right for an individual truly in her prime. A blue velvet dress piqued their mutual interest because it reminded them of the 1986 David Lynch film: “It’s an homage to his wild and wonderful world, but also something classic and unique and cool. I’m excited…”

She should be. “I want good vibes all night long,” Buckley adds of her energetic playlist, giggle-prone glam lineup and the “best snuggles” from her little girl — especially when the night is over and she can run home from the bright lights and enjoy the warmth of first-time motherhood. Before the absolutely non-negotiable pit stop, though: ladies! “Honestly, don’t underestimate the power of the bathroom because it can give you a good rocking of the jaw and some minor relief,” Buckley says. “It’s a great place to be honest with your girls and enjoy it.”
