Retable Bill to limit Malaysian PM’s tenure, urges civil society group

March 4, 2026

Petaling Jaya – The Stability and Accountability Project Malaysia (Projek SAMA) said the bill should be revised to limit the prime minister’s term to 10 years before the next general election.

In a statement on Tuesday (March 3), the company said the re-release must be accompanied by a public campaign of “public opinion”.

“Without broad public support, the merits of this impactful reform could easily be overlooked for partisan or personal interests,” the report said.

It also condemned all 76 MPs (68 opposition, eight government backbenchers) who abstained from voting or were absent from the vote, adding that they deprived Malaysia of the benefit of 10-year term limits.

The benefits include a shift away from the concentration of power in one person and a generational renewal of the country’s leadership, the group said.

“The absence of eight government backbenchers is not a principled objection and should be subject to disciplinary action by Coalition Chief Whip Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof. Failure to adhere to discipline will encourage rogue MPs to engage in more irresponsible behavior in undermining the government’s key policy agenda, whether by embarrassing the government, extorting personal support or simply failing to perform their duties.

“Term limits are not about individuals. They are about protecting the country from unchecked power. We call on all members of Congress to rise above politics and choose principle.
