Starz historical fantasy series Season 7 Outlander The finale ended on a cliffhanger, with Claire (Caitriona Balfe) telling Jamie (Sam Heughan) that she believed her daughter Faith, long thought to be stillborn, was actually alive.
This suspicion was confirmed in the first episode of season eight. Jamie and Claire learn that Faith not only did survive, but grew up to have two daughters of her own—one of whom was actually Fanny (Florrie Mae Wilkinson), a young girl that Jamie’s son William rescued from poverty and asked Claire and Jamie to raise. Jamie and Claire still don’t know how Faith grew up, but a man admits to killing her at sea. (Claire in turn used a knife to free the man.)
Differences from the action in Diana Gabaldon’s original novel Outlander The news that the Starz series has remained largely faithful to the novel shocked fans of the show and its cast. “It’s really sad because you realize you could have had another life,” Balfe said in an interview. As an actor you try to understand where that sadness is because the sadness of losing a child never leaves you. And then you add a new component…it’s hard to find it.” Turning to Heughan, she added: “But you were great in that scene.”
“I think when we first read it, we were like, ‘What? How could that happen?'” Heughan recalled. “I still don’t know if I know the truth. But Flory just put a lot of stuff into it.”
This week’s episode, titled “Prophecy,” brings a different twist and marks Balfe’s directorial debut. What a beautiful moment it was: The episode was not only packed with action—births, funerals, and A Wedding – Most scenes feature Claire, but there is also a bear, who appears in the story just three days before filming. Her co-star was not shy in praising the result. “She’s the reason why there are some really great performances in this episode,” Heughan said before addressing Balfe directly. “Everyone is great, and you are the conduit for that.”
