Earlier this week, designer Erdem Moralioglu celebrated the 20th anniversary of his label with a stunning fashion show at Tate Britain. Titled “Imaginary Conversations,” the series is less a retrospective (a term he avoids using) than a gathering of his many muses, past and present, that he puts into dialogue with one another.
For this Tuesday’s episode penetrateMorarioglu and Ms. Kristin Scott Thomas — her friend for more than a decade, ever since he designed her outfit for the investiture — came together to chat with Chioma.
The two reminisced about their first meeting (when Moralioglu’s studio was located above a movie theater and “everywhere smelled of popcorn”), as well as the infamous nail polish incident at the 2018 Met Gala (you can imagine how this story went), and many other moments when Scott Thomas called her friends to address fashion emergencies. She also took the opportunity at the microphone to ask Erdem about his tailoring process.
As Morarioglu looks back on the past 20 years, the sentiment he expressed in his recent book of the same name still lingers: Everything has changed, and nothing has changed. “I can look back at my graduate school collections and sketchbooks from when I was 21 and still see the connection between who I was then and who I am now,” he said. Listen to the full conversation above.
