On Marco Rubio’s Too-Big Shoes and the Anxious Vanity of the Trump Administration

How can a modern male politician remain in President Trump’s inner circle? Looks like I’m trading my dignity for some ill-fitting dress shoes.

It is reported wall street journal Earlier this week, President Donald Trump enjoyed handing out $145 Florsheim Oxfords to members of his Cabinet and closest allies. (The president likes to pair his shoes with custom-made Brioni suits.) Apparently, at a meeting in December, Trump told Secretary of State Rubio and Vice President J.D. Vance that they were “wearing really bad shoes.” Then he checked the catalog and asked for sizes — Rubio was a size 11.5 and Vance was a 13, who would tell anyone casually— and allegedly said: “You can tell a lot about a person by his shoe size.”

Vance confirmed the story, saying they each received four pairs of shoes. But as several later photos showed, Rubio’s shoes were at least two sizes too big for him.

A photo from January shows Rubio hugging Chuck Schumer. Rubio leans forward to initiate the hug, reaching all the way to the toes, leaving a wedge of air at the heel. Another photo from the World Economic Forum in Davos that same month shows Rubio once again wearing his oversized Florsheims, flanked by White House Chief of Staff Suzy Wiles, U.S. Ambassador to Switzerland and Liechtenstein Calista Gingrich (both women wearing black ballet flats and low heels, respectively), as well as Treasury Secretary Scott Bessant (showing off his Florsheims) and U.S. Trade Representative Jamison Greer (in particular, wearing a pair of Dr. Martens). When he met with visiting South Korean Foreign Minister Cho Hyun at the State Department in February, the gap in the back of Rubio’s heel seemed even larger.
