Stephen Biga named his brand after a wronged woman, and his second collection shows how right and timely his penchant for romance is.
The emerging brand takes its name from the mythical figure Melusine, whom Biggar met at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Legend has it that the water nymph was married to a nobleman who was unaware of her true identity and swore he would never see her bathing. When he breaks his promise, she transforms into a dragon and disappears. When Biggar chose the Clooney Museum’s Unicorn Tapestry as the starting point for autumn, he summoned another fantastical creature to serve as a muse. He was particularly drawn to the sixth panel, “À mon seul désir”, explaining that he was drawn to what he described as a theme of “poised femininity; physically present but inexplicable”. That didn’t stop Biga from showing off see-through pieces, but overall the collection was pretty discreet. The designer also expanded on ideas he proposed last season, such as adding sleeves or using different fabric combinations.
