The clothes civil servants in Washington (and elsewhere) wear to work are often thoughtfully designed. Some, like former first lady Michelle Obama, like to use their platforms to support fashion’s new designer champions. (In 2025, Mrs. Obama wore Matthieu Blazy’s Chanel and Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez’s Loewe shortly after their respective debuts.) Others, like former U.S. Secretary of State Deb Haaland—one of the most prominent Indigenous people in American politics—tend to focus on understated creatives from their own communities.

In November, former First Lady Michelle Obama released a new book, AppearanceTrack her style evolution over the years—from before she was in the White House to after—and delve into the stories behind some of her most glamorous fashion moments.
Of course, she and her stylist and co-author Meredith Koop also had to bring their fashion top game to the press campaign for the book. While on the road, Obama showcased new designs debuting from some of fall’s hottest designers. She wore colorful draped dresses by Loewe’s Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez for a panel discussion at BAM, and a sleek suit by Chanel’s Matthieu Blazy at a People Inc. event, both of which showed Mrs. Obama’s support for designers helping to push fashion forward.
