Vientiane ——Members of the 10th National Assembly unanimously elected Thongloun Sisoulith as President of Laos, officially launching a new five-year legislative term in Laos.
Lawmakers also elected Dr Viengthong Siphandone as the country’s Vice President during the first session of the 10th Legislature on Monday. Several other key leadership positions have also been reaffirmed, reflecting continuity at the top of the government.
Dr. Syed Sumptong Phongwehan continues to serve as Speaker of the National Assembly, and the candidate for Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives was also announced.
Dr. Sonese Sipandun was re-elected as Prime Minister.
The holders of other senior positions were also announced, including the deputy prime minister and the heads of the country’s main supervisory and judicial organs, namely the president of the Supreme People’s Court, the prosecutor-general of the Supreme People’s Procuratorate, the director of the National Audit Office and the director of the National Supervision Service.
These roles are critical to strengthening governance, judicial and institutional oversight and ensuring the country’s highest institutions operate effectively and transparently.
In his inaugural speech, President Thongloun Sisoulith pledged to serve the country with loyalty and integrity.
“I proudly accept this noble and glorious duty and will use my life to fulfill my duties under our respected national flag,” he said. He vowed to uphold the constitution and serve the multi-ethnic people of Laos wholeheartedly.
He reiterated his commitment to implement the resolution passed by the 12th Congress of the Lao People’s Revolutionary Party.
These goals are to strengthen governance through strict compliance with the Constitution and the rule of law, promote sustainable socio-economic growth, expand rural development, respond to social challenges, and maintain a foreign policy of peace, independence, friendship, and cooperation.
President Thongloun Sisoulith called on all Lao citizens, including those living in other countries, to unite to support the development and protection of Laos.
The first session of the 10th Parliament will be held from March 23 to 27, marking the official start of the 10th Legislature and setting the tone for the country’s leadership and policy decisions for the next five years.
The National Assembly is the highest organ of state power, responsible for passing laws, approving national socio-economic development plans and supervising government performance.
The new legislative body is expected to prioritize economic recovery, fiscal stability and structural reforms as Laos continues its transition away from least developed country status and closer regional integration.
President Thongloun Sisoulith finally delivered a speech, calling for unity and patriotism, urging all sectors of society to contribute to national construction and defense of Laos, and to building a prosperous, strong and harmonious country.
