Love is a wonderful thing, especially when you look at it from the outside. In this new column, we’ll look at celebrity couples or, occasionally, Friend pairs—they give us hope for our own romantic futures as we try to learn what they can from their well-documented relationships.
Regular celebrity friendships are great (in general, I like it when people act normal!), but a pair of celebrity friends who aren’t afraid to get a little dramatic is really great. Take Jessie Buckley, for example, she shouted her name out loud Hamnet “Paul, I love you so much, man. I know there are a lot of other women in this room who love you too, but it sucks. Working with you every day, I could drink you like water,” co-star Paul Mescal said while accepting the 2026 Critics Choice Award for Best Actress on Sunday.
To be clear, I’m not suggesting anything romantic between Buckley and Mescal. Although he has struggled to refute accusations about his dating partner, which date back to his days sharing the screen with Daisy Edgar-Jones. Ordinary people, Mezcal has been with singer Gracie Abrams since around June 2024, and Buckley recently welcomed her first child with husband Freddie, who works in mental health and was X factor. (That’s pretty much all we know about him, which in this age of oversharing I have to say is pretty chic!)
While Barkley and Mescal’s relationship is definitely not like thisBuckley’s Critics’ Choice Awards speech illuminated something I’ve long thought: We could all be more passionate and platonic obsessed with our friends. As a 30-something single living alone for the first time in my life, I’ve never been more grateful that I can call my besties at any time, analyze a recent date, figure out how to fix my router, or analyze some weird behavior from my dog. Of course, maybe this is a small Tell someone who’s just a friend, “I can drink you like water,” but that’s really how I feel every time one of my friends remembers to ask me how a big work meeting went, or when they show up at my apartment for dinner to bring my package. In this time of uncertainty and chaos, we can all be so extra!
