What I mean is harnessing the fashion energy of the “hero” but letting my choice of shoes take center stage. I love whimsy and I have always believed that impracticality is a luxury… so why no A pair of chartreuse velvet ballet flats in the middle of winter? I guess maybe my choice has less to do with looking cool and more to do with how a pair of shoes makes me feel.
New York Fashion Week is right around the corner and I’ve been lined up for almost a week with events, dinners, previews, and shows – I can certainly muster up the courage to make a bold move. Enter my Sherpas: Mandy Lee, TikTok’s preeminent “weird shoe” expert, and Sabrina Elba, whose sexy take on minimalism, in all caps, is the star of the show for me. I sent a distress message to both of them. “My advice is don’t try so hard,” Lee replied via voice. “Shift your mindset and think of shoes as items that bring joy rather than something you have to wear to protect your feet. That’s where the magic happens,” says Elba. “If your shoes make you feel a little powerful, a little naughty, then you’re on the right track.”
