When it comes to mastering the art of the travel wardrobe, it’s no surprise that our favorite fashion insiders also moonlight as packing experts. In My Packing Style, we asked some of the most well-traveled people we know to take a look at their travel bags and vacation wardrobes to see how they channel their style on the road. You’ve bookmarked this trip, you’ve taken screenshots of the outfits; now, see how it all comes together.
Sandeep Salter never goes anywhere without wearing pajamas. “I usually take one or two with me every time I travel. I love the feeling of waking up in a strange place, crawling outside in my pajamas and smelling the unfamiliar morning air,” she said. The Salter House co-founder launched her Brooklyn-based company in 2018, first launching cotton pajamas; nearly a decade later, the flowy, versatile pieces remain a staple of her uniform. Of course, they also work for her on-the-go capsule wardrobe; but the makeup of the rest of her luggage (the modest Patagonia duffle bag she’s relied on for years) is constantly changing.

“I tend to work with color schemes and know exactly how to match them,” she explains. “And shoes to match everything.” For the trip to Tulum, the planned color palette was simple: a base of ivory and black, with pink accents to break up the neutrals. These fabrics are perfect for beach vacations—think crisp cotton shorts, lightweight silk-cotton blend dresses, and lightweight pointy layers perfect for wrapping up on chilly nights. Overall, her travel edit is laid back (Salter is on a family trip to Mexico, joined by her sister from Copenhagen and joined by her parents), but there are some star pieces to dress up and down. Effortless yet elegant; not unlike the pajamas that started it all.
Ahead, Salter shares her foolproof formula for planning a vacation outfit, the one lightweight piece she always carries with her, and why a silk scrunchie is the ultimate companion.
