How Elle Fanning Gets Her Perfect Red Lip Right Every Time

“I mixed several shades to get this look,” says Machhausen. The New York-based Chanel makeup artist specializes in delicate, ultra-hydrous lips and has worked on the likes of Sarah Paulson, Alysa Liu and Anne Hathaway. “I started out by defining the lips with the brick shade. I then added a brighter orange shade to the center, which provided lovely highlights and added depth for a more dimensional effect.” The rest of her look was kept classic, leaving lips with shimmer, soft contours and glowing skin, dark lashes and soft, smooth eyeliner.

Elle Fanning’s beauty playbook leaves room for creativity, and her chosen focal point is a statement lip. Elle’s regular collaborator, Machhausen and makeup artist Erin Ayanian Monroe (her sister Dakota Fanning also does her makeup), kept the rest of the glamor simple but still sophisticated, with a radiant complexion that highlighted her freckles and a soft, sunburn-like dusting of delicate pink blush on her fair skin. Perfect glow every time. Eyeliner is used sparingly and lashes naturally fan out.

This shade of red works great so It’s nice because of the high contrast and color pop of her fair skin and blonde hair. It’s not dusty, pastel or (as current red carpet beauty trends dictate) blurry, but sharp, vivid, deliberate lines. Lucky for Fanning, she doesn’t have to stick to color when it comes to creating a statement lip look: raspberry, crimson, soft berry and carnation pink all work for her.
