How Demna Mined the Archives for His Debut Gucci Fall Collection

Demna’s fall debut for Gucci was anything but tame. It’s clear from the start that sex is the main message. So it’s no surprise that as the creative director immerses himself in what he calls “Gucci style,” the one that resonates most is Tom Ford’s explosive era from spring 1996 to fall 2004, an era characterized by both vulgarity and sophistication.

Last season Demna produced a character-driven lookbook called “La Famiglia.” He expanded on this idea in the fall, imagining the brand as a character. “I see Gucci as a human being,” he declared in his show notes. “A man with a wild, unforgettable past and an unmistakable code.” What’s evident is an air of luxury – and the designer’s intimate familiarity with the archives. Here, check out Gucci every now and then.
