Manila – The House Judiciary Committee on Monday began considering impeachment complaints against Vice President Sara Duterte to determine whether they are sufficient in form and substance.
The complaint against Duterte was filed separately by the Makabayan Alliance, which consists of the Kabataan, Gabriela and ACT Teachers party-list groups, lawyer Nathaniel Cabrera and civil society groups.
Four impeachment complaints were filed against Duterte.
However, civil society leaders and clergy who brought the second impeachment charge against her have decided to withdraw the charge and express their “full support” for a third impeachment.
Duterte faces charges of betrayal of public trust, bribery, graft and corruption, including the misuse of P612 million in confidential funds.
The process comes as Duterte announces his 2028 presidential bid, becoming the first person to aspire to do so.
Previously, two impeachment charges against President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. were formally dismissed by the House of Representatives on February 11 due to insufficient substance. /apl
