Finally, butter yellow appears to be officially off the market, joining the ranks of abandoned colors like kiddie green and Barbie pink.
In recent months, we’ve noticed a shift towards cobalt blue. Our first clue came a year ago, when Balenciaga, Chloé, Valentino and Schiaparelli all endorsed the vibrant hue on their Spring 2025 runways. The use of cobalt has increased further over the past few seasons, and for spring 2026 the bold hue is a delight: Victoria Beckham, Gucci, Luar, Tom Ford and Valentino all included it in their products at Chanel’s Métiers d’art show in December.
Celebrities are also beginning to endorse cobalt with aplomb. Dakota Johnson attended the Zurich Film Festival in September wearing a low-rise Gucci dress paired with a turtleneck and ball skirt. As if the bold color wasn’t eye-catching enough, the sheer lace bodice certainly didn’t hurt either. (Incorporating a timeless trend—nude—into a new pop of color is certainly one way to keep it going.)
Johnson isn’t the only fashion celebrity staying on top of trends, either. That same week, Greta Lee was promoted Creation: Ares Dressed in a slim-fitting, runway-fresh Luar suit. Alexander Skarsgård also faced media pain for his film back seatasked Alessandro Michele to create a custom Valentino suit with electric silk buttons.
Street style stars have also tried this shade. Last winter, Jennifer Lawrence swapped out her beloved pop of red for a cobalt blue sweater from The Row. Kendall Jenner styled it as an accent, pairing a statement scarf with straight-leg jeans, a black jacket, cloches and flats.
So, both on and off the red carpet, we expect to see a lot of cobalt in the future.
