Sanders, who died last summer at age 90, was most closely associated with his hometown of Oakland, but seeing his multimedia paintings in person at David Zwirner in Los Angeles was a reminder of California’s rich and prolific black art tradition.

Barry McGee: 99 cents

The iconic 99 Cents Only store in Los Angeles closed all its locations two years ago, but McGee reopened it for just one week. The artist collaborated with Jeffrey Deitch and the Hole to innovatively transform the 99 Cents Only store on Wilshire Boulevard into a pop-up filled with the work of McGee and his friends.

I’ve long been a near-obsessive fan of Shih’s bizarre and surreal sculptural re-creations of everyday objects, and her latest project—which showcases Los Angeles’ obsession with expensive, courtship-related beauty and health enhancers through a series of ceramic Erewhon juice bottles—makes me proud to be an Angeleno.
