Dhaka – The Election Commission (EC) said candidates are submitting documents to the offices of electoral officers in all 300 constituencies with most aspiring candidates opting to file their nominations on the last day.
According to EC officials, a total of 3,144 nomination papers were collected across the country. However, as of yesterday, only 166 nomination papers had been submitted, with the majority expected to be submitted today.
Candidates are submitting nomination papers to 69 election officers, including two divisional commissioners (Dhaka and Chittagong), three district election officers (Dhaka, Chittagong and Khulna) and 64 district deputy commissioners.
The Election Commission announced the election and referendum schedule on December 11. Review of nomination documents will take place from December 30 to January 4, and the deadline for withdrawal is January 20. Election signs will be allocated on January 21 and campaigning will begin on January 22 and run until 7.30am on February 10, 48 hours before voting.
Dhaka constituency: BNP, Jamaat and other documents
BNP aspirant Bobby Hajjaj submitted his nomination papers to the Returning Officer of Dhaka-13 and Dhaka-15 Md Yunus Ali at the Electoral Training Institute (ETI) in Agargaon. Md Yunus Ali is also Dhaka district election officer.
Bangladesh Islamic Andolong Party’s candidate Murad Hossain, joint secretary of the party’s Dhaka North City unit, also filed his nomination for Dhaka-13. He urged authorities to ensure a level playing field and expressed concerns about security, saying candidates and the public felt unsafe.
In Dhaka-15, Dhaka city Jubo Dal leader and BNP nominated aspirant Shafiqul Islam Khan Milton submitted his nomination papers at the ETI building. He said he felt no pressure to run against the Jamaat-e-Islami and expressed confidence that local voters would support candidates from their region.
Meanwhile, at around 1:30 pm, Jamaat-e-Islami Bangladesh Assistant General Secretary Maulana Abdul Halim and Central Executive Committee Member Mobarak Hossain submitted nomination papers for the Dhaka 15 seats on behalf of Jamaat Ameer Shafiqur Rahman.
Earlier in the day, nomination papers were also submitted on behalf of BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman to contest from Dhaka Constituency 17 at the office of Dhaka Divisional Commissioner at Segunbagicha.
Senior BNP leaders file nominations across the country
BNP general secretary Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir today submitted nomination papers to Returning Officer and Deputy Commissioner Ishrat Farzana to contest the Thakurgaon-1 elections.
Meanwhile, nomination papers were also filed today on behalf of BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia to contest the upcoming elections from Bogura-7 (Gabtoli and Shahjahanpur) constituency.
BNP Chairman Advisor Helaluzzaman Talukdar Lalu submitted the nomination papers to Bogura Deputy Commissioner and Returning Officer Toufiqur Rahman at around 2:45 pm.
In an interview with reporters, Heraluzaman said that Khaleda Zia is currently unwell and mainly communicates through gestures. He added that the former prime minister had put her thumbprint on the nomination papers instead of her signature.
Earlier in the day, Feni-1 constituency representative Khaleda Zia also filed her nomination papers. BNP leader Rafiqul Alam Monju submitted the nomination to Feni Deputy Commissioner and Returning Officer Monira Haque.
Additionally, earlier in the day, Bogura-6 (Sadar) submitted nomination papers on behalf of Tariq.
The proceedings were mostly peaceful, but scuffles broke out in Chittagong
The filing of nominations in most constituencies was reported to have been peaceful and festive.
However, in Chittagong, when BNP-nominated candidate Sayeed Al Noman submitted his Ctg-10 nomination papers, a scuffle broke out between police and his supporters.
Sayeed Al Noman arrived at the Chittagong divisional commissioner’s office around 12:30 pm with a large crowd of supporters, allegedly violating the electoral code of conduct. Police held back the crowd, leading to a brief scuffle. The candidate then entered the office with only a few people, while police temporarily blocked the main entrance.
