What better way for New York Fashion Week to kick off than by showcasing hot pieces from one of its best exports? Marc Jacobs kicked off the fall 2026 fashion season with his self-collection — after all, this is the man who once collaborated with Marc Jacobs by Marc Jacobs, creating a diffusion line called Jacobs by Marc Jacobs — that drew from his Spring 1993 Perry Ellis and eponymous Fall 1995 offerings, as well as from Prada’s Spring 1996 and Helmut Lang’s Fall 1995 proposals. But, as Jacobs reminds us, the feeling of novelty is that nothing is new, and isn’t that bittersweet? – is an intentionally shapeless silhouette: loose enough to insert your fist into the waistband of a CBK midi skirt.
The ’90s throwback vibe—especially for the audience, which includes Sofia Coppola, Monica, and Anna Sui—makes it feel almost (almost) a throwback to New York’s most influential era. Whether that continues in the coming days remains to be seen, but it shouldn’t be out of the question: Ralph Lauren will also blow the opening whistle on the CFDA-approved calendar ahead of Rachel Scott’s debut at Proenza Schouler. From there, more of the season’s biggest brands — Coach, Tory Burch, Michael Kors and Calvin Klein, along with the accompanying circus of A-listers — will head into the week, while Collina Strada, Eckhaus Latta and Colleen Allen shift the spotlight from household names to the next generation of talent working to reinvigorate the New York scene.
