What dress code terrifies you? What’s your solution?
“Random.” That’s too vague! My solution is to level up the essentials. If it comes to denim, it has to be
Impeccably tailored and paired with statement pieces. Casual attire should still feel well thought out.
There’s a luncheon on the calendar. How would you integrate this look?
Lunch sauce is one of life’s great pleasures. I’d lean toward a feminine silhouette—perhaps a full-volume dress—and a mid-heel or platform shoe that’s sturdy enough to take from lunch to the next event. I love wearing statement earrings or a necklace to lunch; it’s a built-in conversation starter.
What are your thoughts on masquerade parties? Go all out DIY, or politely decline?
I feel like life is like a costume party – the more chic the better! No silly themes; I love dressing up. Life is short: ski in wool pants or a quilted skirt…and wear feathers! A costume party is just an excuse to experiment without restraint, but be sure to keep it tasteful and don’t make tacky mistakes.
The low point of 5pm has set in, but a dinner party is just around the corner. What energizes you when transitioning from day to night?
Wearing maxi skirts was transformational for me. That, and a margarita.
You don’t have time to think about what to wear to an after-get off work party, but you want to feel chic: What outfit formula always fits your predicament?
You know the old saying “Before you leave, take one thing off” – I say add one! I think there’s something really powerful about adding a great accessory, whether it’s layering a belt over a blazer or a statement necklace over a sweater. It just changes the tone and maybe even your mindset.
What is your overall opinion on cocktail party attire?
Throughout my career, my motto when entertaining has probably been “There’s nothing more stylish than matching your drink to your outfit and your outfit to your table.” Whether you’re hosting or attending, I think this mentality applies. Cocktails are all about the art and celebration of coming together – which I think is always worth dressing up for.
What about black tie? Do you like to take risks or play it safe?
To be honest, I don’t think my name and “safety” have ever gone together. I’m constantly thinking of new ways to reinvent the meaning of black tie – both in design and practice. I really don’t believe that black tie means wearing it longer. I think it’s synonymous with dressing best and dressing elegantly – a challenge I’m always up for!
Which after-dark items are the most worn in your wardrobe year after year?
My giant eye patch covers almost my entire face!
Do you have a favorite party piece or accessory?
I carry a Tonya Hawkes fringe bag that we designed together for the store. This is the most fun bag to carry at night and a guaranteed conversation starter.
What’s always in your dinner bag?
Sewing Kit – You never know when you’ll need it, or be a hero to someone else who needs it! Anyway, that’s the designer in me.
