When evoking images of old-school Donna Karan, one might think of the urban hipster’s uniform: a capsule wardrobe defined by streamlined pieces in black, white and neutral tones. However, few remember the New York designer’s penchant for sexy, vibrant reds. This season, the design team has revitalized the color, reincorporating it into a contemporary setting with a rich dark cherry hue. Coincidentally, it’s very similar to Clinique’s beloved tinted lip balm “Black Honey,” although the design team calls Donna’s version “Black Cherry” as the line’s mainstay.
Many of this season’s looks are monochromatic, whether it’s dark cherry, espresso brown, camel or classic black. Versatility is key, with each piece made with the intention of mixing, matching and, most importantly, letting different textures come into play. Familiar day-to-night essentials, like the faux fur vest from last fall’s collection, return, this time paired with a bias-cut dress, but it can easily be worn over any cozy knit or reversible wool jacket. Classic gold accessories were fully integrated, from the triple chain on the front of the cape to the sculptural accents on the dress’s straps.
Comfort, style and price (each piece is under $800) are key to the brand. The day-to-day look can be summed up by a slim-fitting stretch velvet suit, and Donna Karan Weekend is back with lightweight, airy pieces that are perfect for wherever you choose to escape.
