Dhaka – The council said it was working to control the situation in a “dignified manner”.
Addressing reporters at the EU headquarters in Agargaon this evening, Senior Secretary Akhtar Ahmed gave a brief overview of the overall preparations following a meeting with six members of the EU delegation.
Ballots have been sent to 116 of the 300 precincts and the remainder will reach their destinations by February 7, he said. He explained that the delays were due to court orders to reinstate candidacy in some areas, requiring reprints and changes to ballots.
The Election Commission also announced that the campaign activities of all political parties will end at 7:30 am on February 10. A total of 1,051 administrative magistrates will be deployed across the country from February 8 to 14 to oversee election duties, while members of the Bangladesh National Cadet Corps (BNCC) will also assist.
On the issue of disinformation, Akhtar Ahmed said the committee had discussed the matter with Meta. “We do not want to slow down the Internet or take potential measures. Instead, we have asked Meta to remove derogatory comments, offensive content and misinformation,” he told reporters.
Regarding postal ballots, the Election Commission secretary said that so far 107,168 ballots have reached overseas return officials, while a total of 379,924 postal ballots have reached Bangladesh post offices after voting domestically and overseas.
He added that 444,952 postal ballots had been deposited in mailboxes around the world, of which 211,122 had been completed. Ballot deadline is February 12 at 4:30 pm.
Akhtar Ahmed also said that 6,091 legally detained prisoners have registered to vote through postal ballots.
