New Delhi – Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar, one of the state’s most influential and experienced political leaders, died in a tragic plane crash while landing at Baramati airport on Wednesday morning.
His sudden death plunged Maharashtra into deep mourning and marked the end of an important political era.
Ajit Pawar holds the record of serving as deputy chief minister six times, the highest in the history of Maharashtra. Known for his discipline and administrative efficiency, he was often described as the minister who arrived at Mantralaya at 7 am. His death was widely mourned, as he lost a strong administrator and a mass leader with close ties to the grassroots.
Accident details
According to preliminary information, Ajit Pawar took a private plane from Mumbai to Baramati to participate in the district council elections. According to reports, around 9:15 a.m., the plane encountered a technical glitch while landing at Baramati Airport, caught fire and crashed on the runway.
Local government, fire brigade and emergency services rushed to the scene immediately. However, the rescue efforts were unsuccessful due to the fierce fire and multiple explosions.
Aircraft information
The aircraft involved in the accident was a Learjet 45, operated by VSR Aviation, registration number VT-SSK. The jet is typically used for VVIP travel and is designed to carry 8-9 passengers. Known for its speed and agility, the Learjet 45 can fly at around 860 km/h and is capable of landing on short runways, making it suitable for small airports such as Baramati.
In the aviation industry, the Learjet 45 is often called the “Lamborghini of business jets” due to its advanced engine performance and aerodynamic design.
An eyewitness near the Baramati airport said the plane appeared to be skidding on landing. Moments later, a huge explosion occurred and the plane was engulfed in flames. We rushed to the spot immediately, but the fire was out of control. There were several explosions. It was so terrible that it was impossible to save anyone.
The family rushes to Baramati
Supriya Sule, Sunetra Pawar and Parth Pawar left for Baramati soon after the news of the crash broke out. Supriya Sule and Sunetra Pawar were in Delhi to attend the budget session of Parliament and rushed back immediately.

Ajit Pawar was born on July 22, 1959 in Deolali Pravara in Ahmednagar district and was known as “Dada” in political circles. In 1982, he entered public life through a cooperative. In 1991, he was elected as Baramati MP but resigned to pave the way for his uncle Sharad Pawar.
He has represented Baramati Assembly constituency continuously since 1991. Over the years he has handled key matters including finance, water resources, planning and energy, earning a reputation for firm decision-making and administrative control.
With the death of Ajit Pawar, Maharashtra has lost a decisive leader, an efficient administrator and a statesman who left a lasting mark on the governance and political culture of the state.
