Islamabad – Controversies surrounding ECP in recent years have heightened these concerns.
The conduct and timing of the 2024 general election, decisions affecting PTI’s electoral participation and disputes over reserved seats have all drawn criticism and formal litigation.
Delays in new appointments to the European Communist Party have previously been attributed to legal and political obstacles preventing the last opposition leader from cooperating with the government.
However, with Mohammad Khan Achakzai being officially notified as leader of the opposition in the National Assembly, the constitutional consultation mechanism on appointments is once again fully operational.
It is now up to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Mr Achakzai to begin formal consultations and agree on a mutually acceptable appointment.
More delays will only be seen as political reluctance, which will reinforce perceptions of the fragility of Europe’s communist institutions, deepen political polarization and erode public confidence in Pakistan’s troubled polling system.
Therefore, the Prime Minister and the Leader of the Opposition must fulfill their obligations. Swift and consensus-based appointments can restore confidence in the ECP and reaffirm Pakistan’s commitment to democratic principles.
