Out with the old and in with the new: at least that’s what the eye makeup trends of 2026 are signaling, where we’re trading minimalism for expressionist maximalism. While this certainly doesn’t mean we’ll all be heading to the office in carnival glamor, experimentation and self-expression through makeup is becoming a part of daily beauty routines.
“Reactions to the ‘clean girl’ makeup aesthetic have been dominating social media and beauty culture for the past five years,” says professional makeup artist Kasey Spickard. “We’re seeing graphic, structured eyeliners come into play more and more. Plus, there’s more color, often diffuse, soft and pearlescent.” The expressiveness we’re seeing on the runway and on the red carpet can also serve as a broader commentary on the current sociopolitical and economic climate, Spickard continued. “When things get more fraught and tense, you often see bolder aesthetics in response as a way of building character,” he said. “Throughout history, when entire cultures feel like they do now, people want to regain their sense of self, and beauty is one of the most direct ways to do that.”

With that in mind, there are many ways to play, and the eyes are an easy entry point. We’re seeing everything from the resurgence of trendy blue eyeshadows to the inherently playful nature of Korean cosmetics, where packaging and formula textures are as imaginative as the shades themselves. For those who are slow to adapt, subtle updates like unexpected mascara or eyeliner colors offer a low-commitment way to explore. Beyond the Lisa Frank folder-level Y2K brightness, there’s another rebellion taking shape against minimalism: a more downtown, unfinished aesthetic defined by smudged lines and cool shadows.
Basically, the name of the game is anything but boring. Read on for an in-depth look at five of the most eye-catching eye makeup trends to watch out for in 2026—or should we say, keep your eyes peeled?
New blue eye shadow
Blue eyeshadow is a time-tested bold beauty classic that always reappeared in the first half of the last century. “Blue has been popular for decades, from Elizabeth Taylor’s iconic eyeshadow to Cleopatra Kate Moss wears an icy blue smokey eye at the 1996 Gucci spring show,” celebrity makeup artist Lisa Eldridge previously said Fashion. Donni Davy, professional makeup artist and mastermind behind EuphoriaBeauty lovers consider blue eyeshadow a surefire way to get into a colorful look. “It’s universally flattering because it’s the opposite of skin tone on the color wheel, making it complementary to all skin tones,” David previously said. Additionally, Spickard predicts that we might even start to see pale green become another popular color, but we’ll be reviewing the pistachio shade trend in 2027.
The novelty of blue shades these days is their softness – of course, you can still opt for all-over modern matte blues – although many brands are opting for shades with a more diffuse, almost blurry effect. Take Fara Homidi’s new Essential Eye Compact, for example, which offers a wash of color rather than a stark opacity. Clé de Peau Beauté’s palette, meanwhile, aims for a soft, light-washed pastel blue with subtle pearlescent shimmer. For more precise application, Victoria Beckham Beauty’s eyeshadow stick has a light blue hue and can be applied as a liner or as a single color all over your lids.
