(In fact, the LCD doesn’t seem to be playing between 2011 and 2024, although to be fair, they’re on vacation from 2011 to 2016, too.)
So when they put the song quite early on Saturday night on the main stage, it was a thrill. Maybe it’s also a projection, but the lyrics – “Oh, I don’t know, I don’t know, oh, where to start / we are North Americans / Finally, make the same mistake again, again / North American, North American” – surely feels like a comment on the sad and confusing current affairs of the United States
In fact, it requires a certain degree of dissociation, a shutdown in reality and/or psychological gymnastics to dance at the festival with your friends, while hockey agents roam the streets, the environment continues to collapse, mass shootings persist, public figures are assassinated, income inequality, scrutiny deepens, scrutiny of our civil liberties mastery, we think we are born. It’s hard not to be in the crowd on the weekend, and it’s unclear how many people canceled their Disney+ and Hulu subscriptions in the days after Jimmy Kimmel temporarily suspended from the show. Participating in any given music festival is a major privilege, and sometimes people feel introverted when things outside the gate become so desperate. At the same time, how gratifying relief it is to dance for a while.
James Murphy is mourning a lot in the United States now, aptly saying, “I don’t know, I don’t know, oh, where to start.” But the beauty of LCD suits is not only one of the best live performances of a generation, but also because of the enormous intellectual and emotional weight of their music. You can dance, you can cry, and many people do it throughout the show because the group is through “family” and “dance-like dance cleanliness” and “a great man”, which is a reality of love, loss and pragmatism when someone special sets out for great things.
So, it’s especially apt to be the song on Saturday, given that the announcement was released earlier that day given the dance world lost its giant giants over the weekend, with Keith McIver of the legendary Scottish duo (Espacio) dying of brain cancer at the age of 57.
