Be Like Amanda Seyfried and Get a Hobby This Year

The sun has set before five o’clock, the wind is howling, and the Christmas tree is parked on the side of the road: you’re back at work, and the post-holiday gloom sets in. A craving for cookies, a hint of melancholy, and the urge to hibernate and fix your life right now. In other words, it’s January.

You’ve probably already made your New Year’s resolutions, but if you can, let us suggest one that might be easier than waking up at 5 a.m. to train for a marathon: pick up a hobby.

Scientific research shows that having a hobby—especially one that takes you out of reality, out of doomscrolling, and into simulated happiness—is strongly linked to increased happiness and well-being. Hobbies may even help you live longer: A 2025 study found that having a hobby reduced the risk of death by 29% in people over 50. Hobbies differ from other leisure activities because they involve “intentional participation and enjoyment,” the study said. So whether you’re crafting, creating art, or volunteering, basically, you’re doing something for yourself, and the benefits are numerous.

If you’re looking for a little inspiration for your new campaign, look no further FashionAmanda Seyfried is January’s digital cover star and a true hobby queen. Over the years, she has shared her insights into many delightful hobbies, from crochet to magic and more.

“I can’t do one thing. I have to crochet and do other things,” she told Seth Meyers last year, appearing on his show to promote her crime drama changming river. “I crochet, which is very therapeutic, and then I listen to books on tape,” she added. She gave Meyers a crocheted Icelandic poppy that she made and said she often gives away her creations to friends, including a crocheted purse that she packaged and gave to Sydney Sweeney maid.

Known for her musical talents, she has Ann Lee’s last words in Mamma Mia! 》and Les Misérables. She grew up playing piano and clarinet and now plays guitar and dulcimer, a traditional Appalachian instrument she learned during the pandemic. Last year, she wowed fans with her hidden talent as she showcased her dulcimer skills on Jimmy Fallon’s cover of Joni Mitchell’s “California.”

On top of that, Seyfried also moonlights as a magician. She recently let a coin disappear (and reappear) on Seth Meyers. So, for a little more whimsy and joy this year, why not pick up a crochet hook or a paintbrush, or join a book club? With any luck, 2026 may turn out to be the year of the hobby.
