Dhaka – Bangladesh will open an embassy in Argentina, Foreign Minister Khalil Rehman said yesterday.
The decision comes four years after Argentina established a mission in Bangladesh.
Argentina was so moved by Bangladesh’s support for the Argentine football team that won the 2022 FIFA World Cup that it reopened its embassy in Dhaka in February 2023, 45 years after it was closed.
“The Argentine ambassador was very happy and mentioned that outside of Argentina, Bangladesh is the biggest supporter of their team,” Khalil told reporters after Argentine Ambassador Marcelo Carlos Cessa paid him his first courtesy call at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
“We plan to increase the content of bilateral relations and trade in the future, especially in agriculture, energy and readymade garments. A team from our side will start discussions with them in March,” the minister added.
He said both sides expressed optimism about taking bilateral relations to new heights under the leadership of Prime Minister Tariq Rahman.
During the meeting, the ambassador congratulated the foreign minister on his assumption of office and conveyed the greetings of the Argentine government to the newly elected government of Bangladesh.
He said Argentina hopes to further strengthen relations between the two countries. In response, the foreign minister reiterated Bangladesh’s strong commitment to deepening the long-standing friendly ties between Dhaka and Buenos Aires.
The two sides also identified priority areas for strengthening cooperation, especially expanding bilateral trade, with a focus on diversifying imports and exports.
The two sides also discussed opportunities to strengthen agricultural technology cooperation, advance sports cooperation through the effective implementation of the existing football memorandum of understanding, and explore energy trade and supply chain partnerships.
Increasing Bangladeshi garment exports to Argentina was also a focus of discussion.
The foreign minister suggested that relevant stakeholders hold multi-sectoral dialogues to advance cooperation in an orderly and results-oriented manner.
Earlier, Ambassador Sessa met with the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Shamma Obeid, who highlighted the strong people-to-people ties between the two countries, especially through football, and proposed structural cooperation in the development of youth and women’s football.
