Artist Monacco Dunn Looks for Vintage That Has “A Story or Perhaps a Ghost Still in the Threads”

Where are you from?

I’m originally from Vancouver, British Columbia, but when I was 10 years old, I moved to a small town in northern Ontario called Deep River, where we lived in a cabin in the woods. The town has a population of 4,200 people, so it’s really, really remote. This is a nuclear reactor town. It’s very beautiful; it looks exactly like Sweden.

We always play pretend. We had a TV but no cable so we didn’t watch it. I wasn’t allowed to play with computers or anything like that, so I used to go out and play with sticks and make up games. I have a lot of books about the Middle Ages and a lot of fairy tales. My grandfather would travel around the world and he would always bring back artifacts. I spent a lot of time with him, and he had a parrot—he still has that parrot—called Socrates. He is from Greece. We would go for walks in the woods and my grandpa would tell me it was like a fairy forest and we would build fairy houses.

Is there a story behind your name?

My mom just wanted to give me a fun name. I like it because it’s decadent and luxurious – I must really like yachts, champagne, oysters, and live my life in a glamorous and mysterious way, haha!

“This is my party look inspired by medieval knights. The sunglasses are from 2000s Chanel; the cape is from Ann Demeulemeester; the skirt is actually a skirt I bought at Value Village in Vancouver (the tags were cut off so I don’t know what it is, but it feels a little cheap); and the shoes are vintage Rodo’s made in Italy.”

Have you always been interested in fashion?

I’ve been obsessed with dressing up for as long as I can remember. I used to either dress up as a princess, a dog, or a boy working on cars with my dad. I’ve always loved dressing up; my stepmother makes clothes, so she made me a lot of the purple costumes I asked for. And then I had a lot of old clothes; my parents never bought anything new.
