“There has been a long-standing debate about whether fashion is art or just fashion,” said Tatsuyuki Suzuki, manager of Archive Store in Tokyo’s Shibuya Ward. Suzuki is responsible for the store’s carefully curated and curated collections, which include a piece from Comme des Garçon’s Spring 2018 collection. “It’s not art to be worn, but I think it’s close to art,” he said of the jacket, which features a painting by 16th-century artist Giuseppe Arcimboldo.
Although Shibuya is known for its many vintage shopping stores, Archive Store operates a little differently. Suzuki explains that the store “shows and sells archives of fashion magazines, with an emphasis on designer brands.” In fact, the experience is more akin to an art museum, as the store features gallery-worthy pieces, such as a Maison Margiela jacket from fall 1992, which is protected under a glass case. Suzuki was responsible for the archive’s collections like a museum curator, dedicated to preservation and showing a keen eye for little-known archival details. Other rarities include a pair of Margiela Fall 1995 handmade trousers with a now-defunct labeling system inside the waistband – a truly unique thing to witness for any fashion die-hard.
