I Tried Dozens of Bridal Shower Dresses—Here’s How I Found the One

After months of thoughtful consideration for the color scheme, guest list, dress code, and table decorations for our big wedding weekend, the bridal shower felt like a breath of fresh air. Don’t get me wrong – I’m enjoying every minute of this wedding planning season; but the simplicity of throwing on a beautiful dress and attending a small spring gathering with the most special women in my life sounds like a welcome pause in a busy year. The best part? My lovely mother was hosting the event in my hometown and with the help of some family and friends she insisted that I let them host it. That means I’ve turned my attention to the (in my opinion) best bit: finding the perfect bridal shower dress.

As with any event, location and time of year are the two biggest determinants of my sartorial direction. My bridal shower will be held at the end of April at a historic hotel on the crystal blue Finger Lakes in upstate New York. If you’re familiar with the area, you probably know that early spring temperatures don’t make you want to jump into a lake. (I’m lucky if it’s 60 degrees on shower day!) With that in mind, I browsed mostly midi and maxi dresses and even tried on a dress or two with sleeves.

I also wanted to stay true to the overarching theme we were incorporating throughout our wedding: our ceremony was going to be very classic New England style, incorporating coastal colors and vintage inspired pieces. Plus, sticking to the overall design concept of your wedding ensures that your bridal shower will feel like the wedding that’s about to happen. After trying on dozens of outfits—and scrolling online for hours analyzing the endless options that exist—I finally found my perfect piece. It’s also timely: with only T-90 days left until the big day, one more item is missing from my to-do list.

Read on for the highlights, extras, and what made my heart flutter.

First up: this feathered Jil Sander beauty! When I saw this dress on the showroom floor, I almost ran to grab it. I fell even more in love with it when I wore it – the feathers floated around my body and bounced as I put on the bridal look in a playful way. But it didn’t feel like the right venue for me, so I kept looking.
