During the pandemic, the Y2K revival came and went. However, 7 For All Mankind’s newly appointed creative director Nicola Brognano isn’t ready to give up on the revival just yet. While 7 For All Mankind is generally thought of as an approachable mall brand, Brognano wanted to use styling to broaden the brand’s possibilities. “It’s easy to think of girls like Mary-Kate Olsen, Kate Moss or Sienna Miller from 2005, 2006 – they were very fashionable but had an attitude of nonchalance underneath, and that’s the attitude of this collection,” he said.
At his debut show, this was reflected in layers of club-girl clothes: ruffled miniskirts, knitted bodycon scarves, super-skinny jeans, piles of costume jewelry, and an assortment of casual jackets that often fell off the models’ shoulders. Each model also wore club wristbands and dangerously high platform heels. Denim has been the brand’s foundation for years, but Brognano has breathed new life into a range of other categories, including knitwear, leather and, ultimately, accessories.
One of his first acts as creative director was to appoint ’90s grunge and indie music legend Chloë Sevigny as brand ambassador. To him and many others, she represents the ultimate cross-generational It Girl. In his runway debut, she was front and center and didn’t look out of place thanks to the beauty her clothes represented.
