36 Hours in Lagos, Nigeria: Things to Do and See

9:15 am Find peace in a cathedral

If you get up early, visit the beautiful Christ Church Cathedral near Lagos Island for early morning services. Maybe you’ll be ambitious after a good night out, but you won’t be alone: a fact of life in Lagos is that its dance floors and churches are packed with people, and many of the same people. Admire the cathedral’s majestic façade up close, right in the heart of Lagos Island’s bustling business district and home to some of the city’s Afro-Brazilian architectural styles, making the trip alone worth it. As a famous church, it’s customary to welcome guests, but only go if you plan to stay for the entire service (usually around two hours).

12 noon Relax by the sea

Spend a day at the beach to recover from a night out. Before you go, pick up a local favorite: well-seasoned meat pies with fried minced beef or chicken, potatoes and vegetables, wrapped in crispy, buttery pastry. Head to the nearest Milk and Honey cafe (there is one in Lekki and one in Ikoyi) and fill a bag with meat or chicken pies (3,520 naira), sausage rolls (2,530 naira) and donut-style snacks called puffs (1,430 naira). Pack your goodies and head to Tarkwa Bay Beach, a 15-minute (9,000 naira) boat ride from various marinas in Victoria Island and Ikoyi. Stretch out, soak up the sun, and read your book from Jazzhole while admiring Lagos’ vast coastline.
